How to Look at Your Finances Before You Start Budgeting: Buckets, Not Spreadsheets
You hate budgeting. I get it—Excel feels like homework, tracking every latte like a crime scene. But here’s the truth: you don’t need to watch every penny to get organized. You just need a high-level map—buckets that make sense.
That’s where two simple rules come in: the 50-30-20 and the 70-20-10. They’re not about micromanaging—they’re about putting your money into clear piles so you see what’s real, without the guilt.
The 50-30-20 Rule
Take your after-tax income. Split it like this:
- 50% Needs (rent, groceries, gas—stuff you can’t skip)
- 30% Wants (Netflix, dinners out, that new lip gloss)
- 20% Savings/Debt (emergency fund, extra payments, future you)
Why it works: it’s stupid-easy. No apps, no formulas—just three buckets. You glance at your paycheck, mentally shove half into “musts,” a third into “fun,” and the rest into “future.” If Needs are over 50%, you know you’re stretched—without opening a spreadsheet.
The 70-20-10 Rule
A little tighter, perfect if you’re starting small:
- 70% Needs (same basics—housing, bills, food)
- 20% Savings/Debt (build that cushion first)
- 10% Wants (treats, but not total chaos)
This one’s gold for beginners. It forces you to prioritize safety before splurges—without feeling punished. 10% Wants still lets you live.
Use your real income and expenses and customize your buckets and bucket percentages to easily understand your spending habits and how to organize your finances.
Both rules do the same thing: they stop the “where did my money go?” spiral. You don’t track every dollar—you just see how much is locked into survival, how much you can play with, how much is quietly stacking for tomorrow.
And yeah, you can do this without apps or pens. Grab your last two paystubs. Add up what you actually spent (bank app helps). Divide by three buckets. Done. If Wants eat 40%? You’ll notice. If Savings is zero? You’ll feel it. No guilt—just clarity.
That’s exactly why I made Before the Budget: Organized Finances—a nine-dollar PDF that gives you this snapshot in five minutes. No spreadsheets. No judgment. Just three clean buckets: income, expenses, debts. Print it, fill it out once a month, watch the fog lift.
It’s the step before budgeting. Because once you see your money in buckets—not chaos—you actually want to save. You stop hiding from bills. You start playing the game.
